ENGLEWOOD, Colo. - The Denver Broncos figured theyd be talking about facing Tom Brady this week, not pondering Peyton Mannings future and wondering who will be their next coach.Even with their ailing QB scuffling down the stretch, the Broncos sauntered into the playoffs certain they had found the formula to avenge last years Super Bowl plunge. That mixture featured balance on offence, dominance on defence and solid special teams.Yeah, we definitely had the ingredients, linebacker Steven Johnson said. It just didnt work out our way. So, weve just got to learn from it. Go home and sulk. Eat some ice cream for a couple of days. And then snap out of it and try to go back to work.GM John Elway gets no such break as he searches for a new coach while sifting through the wreckage of another season-ending debacle in which the Broncos lost as heavy favourites.Their lack of fire in Denvers 24-13 loss to Indianapolis on Sunday led to a quick parting with coach John Fox less than 24 hours later.Speculation about who will replace Fox starts with Baltimore offensive co-ordinator Gary Kubiak because of his close ties to Elway, whom Kubiak backed up at quarterback during their playing days together.Elway met with offensive co-ordinator Adam Gase on Wednesday morning. Gase, the hottest young offensive mind in this years crop of head coaching candidates, had a lengthy second interview with the San Francisco 49ers on Tuesday in Denver. After failing for the third straight time to parlay the best regular-season record into a Super Bowl title, the Broncos face an off-season of uncertainty unlike anything theyve experienced since closing the chapter on Tebowmania three years ago.Manning, who was bothered by spotty protection all season and a strained right thigh this last month, is pondering retirement.Elway asked him not to make a rash decision — although hell need an answer before the last day of the league year, March 9, when Mannings $19 million salary for 2015 becomes guaranteed. If Manning returns, the Broncos might have to ask him to restructure the final two years of his contract to free up money to bolster the roster, particularly the porous O-line.His protection failed to give him enough time or space to step into his throws. When opponents used the Seahawks Super Bowl template and clogged the crossing routes, Manning had to throw outside the numbers and morphed from one of the all-time greats into a pedestrian passer, one who overthrew his receivers eight times Sunday.Even if he wont have to move on from Manning — whos 2,147 yards, or about a half-seasons worth, shy of Brett Favres career passing yardage record — Elway has a long to-do list this off-season.Among their dozen unrestricted free agents are star receiver Demaryius Thomas, Pro Bowl tight end Julius Thomas and nose tackle and defensive captain Terrance Pot Roast Knighton.Knighton could follow Jack Del Rio to Oakland. Drafted by Del Rio in Jacksonville, Knighton thrived under his tutelage in Denver. He recently told The Associated Press, I want to be wherever Jack is.Cornerback Chris Harris Jr. doesnt want to see Knighton go.I love the way he plays and what he brought to our team every day, Harris said. Im going to send him the same message Im sending Peyton: Come back!Wes Welker, whos coming off his worst statistical season since 2005, said hes not sure he wants to return to Denver, adding, There are a lot of things Ive got to figure out.Same with Elway, who pledged to address his O-line this off-season after fixing his defence last year.Having been a quarterback, he knows that Im going to try to take care of him and that offensive line, Elway said of Manning. We always want to protect the quarterback. I think a change in scenery for those guys might help them also.Starters Orlando Franklin and Will Montgomery are free agents. If Manning retires, backup Brock Osweiler, who served a three-year apprenticeship under the five-time MVP, is ready to roll.Osweiler, who mopped up four games this season and threw his first career touchdown pass three weeks ago, said: I will approach this off-season the same exact way whether he comes back or doesnt come back.Brock has made that progress that you would hope he would make, Elway said. Whats difficult is he hasnt gotten a lot of playing time. When that time comes, well see where he is. (But) the training that hes gotten up to this point is second to none.___AP NFL website: www.pro32.ap.org and www.twitter.com/AP_NFLCustom New England Patriots Jerseys . Start with rankings, projections, injury reports and articles in the Fantasy News section of TSN.ca so that you have a good idea what to expect for the 2013 NFL season, paying attention to rookies, sleepers, position battles and more. There is not merely one way to build a winning team, so its important to maximize value. Given the nature of the sport, and the injuries that occur throughout the season, its important to build depth on your fantasy roster, so that you have a viable alternative at the ready when one of your starters is hurt or, at the very least, on a bye week. For years, running back has been the one position on which to focus and, while there has been some variance in recent seasons, it remains the safest way to build a team. 16 backs rushed for at least 1,000 yards last season (23 averaged at least 60 rushing yards per game), and 13 had at least eight rushing touchdowns, so getting two runners in the early rounds isnt a bad way to go. Of course, even that approach comes with the caveat that running backs get injured -- something about carrying the ball and being the target of 11 angry men -- but with most leagues employing at least a couple of starters at RB and then potentially a flex position or two, securing the services of running backs that are clearly number one on their teams depth chart is a safe play. The appeal of quality runners stands in contrast to a league that is becoming increasingly focused on passing. Scarcity means value, though, so while there are more productive options at quarterback and the receiver spots, the top running backs hold their value. Part of the reason that there isnt such urgency to go for a quarterback early is that a dozen quarterbacks threw for at least 3,900 yards last season and the quarterback ranked 13th in passing yardage, Cam Newton, alsoo had more than 700 rushing yards.dddddddddddd With a dozen quarterbacks throwing at least 25 touchdowns, that pretty much assures a productive starter for most leagues, especially considering that most leagues require only one starting quarterback. That doesnt mean settling for any quarterback, because Drew Brees and Aaron Rodgers are better bets than the 10th or 12th quarterbacks picked, but if you end up with Tony Romo, Andrew Luck or Eli Manning, there shouldnt be major regrets. As NFL teams throw the ball more frequently, there is a wider net to cast over wide receivers that could contribute to your fantasy squad. 32 wide receivers averaged at least 60 receiving yards per game last season, while 25 scored at least seven touchdowns. Again, theres obviously more appeal at the top end, where Calvin Johnson is a difference-maker and Brandon Marshall, Andre Johnson and Dez Bryant could all be top-tier producers, but there was value to be found from lesser-knowns like Cecil Shorts and T.Y. Hilton too and there will be young receivers that emerge this season as well. Get one or two proven guys and then secure depth at the position. Tight end is an interesting proposition, since Jimmy Graham is at the head of a thinning class. Jason Witten and Tony Gonzalez are reliably productive too, but what about Rob Gronkowski? Under normal circumstances, he would challenge Graham for the top spot at the position, but after an offseason of surgeries, Gronkowski presents a risk. Then, there is a large group of similarly-productive options. Like the quarterback position, its better to get one of the best but, if that doesnt happen, youre not necessarily going to regret having the 10th-best tight end. Kickers and defences are late-round concerns. There is too much variability in their production to invest early selections, no matter how good you think the Niners defence is going to be or how many times you think Stephen Gostkowski will boot it through the uprights. The bottom line, though, is that a little preparation can make your team better come draft (or auction) day and TSNs Fantasy Football League Manager will be there every step of the way to help you enjoy the 2013 season.
