MANCHESTER, England -- As statements of intent go, it couldnt have been much bigger. "If we only consider this season," Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini said, "there is just one club in Manchester -- and its ours." That comment -- an eye-catching one from a coach usually so reserved in front of the media -- was made last month ahead of a Champions League game against Barcelona. To some, it was a mere statement of fact, with City 12 points ahead of United in the Premier League at the time and still in contention for trophies on four fronts. To others, it was unnecessary goading. And it no doubt will have hit a nerve over at Old Trafford, at a club that is the reigning English champion and had ruled football in the city for the past three decades. For that reason, United may take even more pleasure than usual if it can beat City in Tuesdays Manchester derby at Old Trafford. "Well, Manchester United had lots and lots of seasons of domination," Moyes said Monday, when asked about Pellegrinis comment. "I dont think if I was a manager I would have turned round and necessarily said that we were the only club in Manchester because football does change, it goes in cycles." "I think its important for us to show the level weve got," Moyes added, "and that were not as far away as many people would have us." Theres been no consistency and of the many alarming statistics to blight Moyes short reign, one perhaps stands out -- United has just one win this campaign against a team in the current top nine. Ridley also coached Team Canada at the 1988 Olympics, the Pan Am Games and the World Junior Championship. A five-time All-Star, three-time Gold Glove Award winner and two-time Silver Slugger Award winner, Wallach was drafted in 1979 by the Expos and played for the team from 1980 to 1992. He remains the franchises all-time leader in games played, hits, doubles, runs batted in and total bases. A California native, Wallach was known as a strong defensive third baseman, often compared to legendary third baseman Brooks Robinson. Following his time in Montreal, Wallach played three more seasons with the Dodgers and one with the Los Angeles Angels, retiring after the 1996 season. "With all of the great players that we had in Montreal, its pretty amazing that I am the all-time leader in all of the categories," he said. "Of the time spent in Montreal, I was most proud of how we acquired players and gave them second chances," said Cook. "We went out and got players like Dennis Martinez and Pascual Perez, who had several productive seasons in Montreal." Represented by his three children, Ridley was key in helping the Blue Jays establish a strong scouting presence in Canada from their inception. "My fathers passion was for teaching and helping players get better," said his son Shane Ridley.
